A Co., 1st Aviation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, US Army, stationed at Phu Loi, Republic of Vietnam; Spec 4 (E-4), crew chief/door gunner on a UH-1D Iroquois (Huey) helicopter.

I encountered quite a few interesting experiences during my tour in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief/door gunner. I was with A Co., First Aviation Battalion, First Infantry Division, stationed at Phu Loi and flew in a UH-1D Iroquois, more commonly known as a “Huey.”

Our company had been originally formed in Korea as the 155th Aviation Co. and moved to Vietnam in October 1965. Our missions included carrying troops on combat assaults, resupplying troops on the ground, extracting soldiers who had been wounded or killed, flying high ranking officers over battlefields for command and control, flying over enemy held areas with load speakers and dropping leaflets for psychological warfare, picking up fresh troops and delivering them to their assigned stations, and an occasional milk run.
