American Jailed in Peru Returns to New York
She has captivated New Yorkers for 16 years, the daughter of Manhattan academics convicted in Peru of aiding a leftist terrorist group, famous for a fist-waving rant to television cameras that cemented her reputation among Peruvians as a dangerous radical.
On Tuesday, as the woman, Lori Berenson , touched down on American soil for the first time since her arrest, nothing about her recalled that image as she pushed a luggage cart across the shiny floor of Newark Liberty International Airport, her 2-year-old son, Salvador, trotting beside her.
Ms. Berenson, 41, strode past a throng of reporters, ignoring them with such focus that at first she walked right by her mother, who was waiting with a brown Bloomingdale’s bag stuffed with a puffy warm coat for Salvador.
“Thank you,” was all Ms. Berenson said to the reporters as she slid into the back seat of a car driven by a male relative wearing a Yankees cap. She buckled Salvador, who clutched a stuffed orange parrot, into his car seat, and they sped off.
