Black Friday shoppers in frenzy
The parking lot filled beyond the spaces usually reserved for road-weary tenants sleeping in trailers and RVs. The lines of holiday shoppers flowed over into the aisles, blurring the ranks between those still finding the best deals and others simply trying to make their way to check-out lines.
Roughly 20 minutes after Walmart let shoppers tear away at the products sitting on the shelves, an employee nudged the arm of another one to tell her: “We’re all out of carts.”
“Already?” came the reply.
If the major box stores considered their push to start Black Friday earlier an experiment, they can now consider it a success.
Walmart unwrapped its big-ticket items at 10 p.m. Thursday (customers were allowed in earlier to jostle for position) and saw a steady stream of eager buyers waiting to get the best deals. As more packed the parking lots around the vicinity (the Eastgate Plaza located behind the Supercenter had a full lot), others made their way out. Some ran to their vehicles, hoping to beat others to the exits. Some stopped in bewilderment, smoking a cigarette to calm their nerves.
