This year, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on consecutive Sundays, which creates a perfect storm of aggravation. The Friday before and Monday after are sure to be extremely busy no matter how you choose to travel.

If you’re flying, however, there could be additional delays. The Department of Transportation this month fined American Eagle Airlines $900,000 for keeping scores of passengers stranded on the tarmac for more than three hours on one day in May. Experts say this could likely lead to carriers canceling flights to avoid being hit with fines in the event of similar delays. How to deal with possible cancellations? Check your flight before you leave for the airport, and when you do leave, get there early. The lines are longer and security can slow things down considerably. That said, co-operate with the TSA — adhere to the 3-1-1 rule (liquids, aerosols and gels must be in containers 3 ounces or less, items must be put in a 1-quart, clear plastic zip-top bag and only one zip-top bag per passenger).
