CHICO – It's Victorian. It's beautiful. And it's astonishingly and unabashedly pink.
Bidwell Mansion stands three stories high and rambles over 12,000 square feet and 26 rooms. As centerpiece of a state historic park, the house survives as a memorial to John and Annie Bidwell, who donated 8 acres of their cherry orchard to a school that would become California State University, Chico.
This brick structure, which nods to the Italian Villa in its style, cost around $60,000 at the time of its completion in 1868. The exterior is finished with pink-tinted plaster.
In case you can't tell, it took me a few minutes to recover from the pinkness. This is not the pigment that would have popped into my mind when I envisioned California's early settlers.
Our party got our first view of the house on a sunny August day, having left Placerville at 10 a.m. and arriving just in time for lunch. We lugged our ice chest and a blanket onto the front lawn near the pink gazebo and the monkey puzzle tree, and we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the shade among the squirrels, woodpeckers and scrub jays.
