A Heathrow Airport baggage handler has been jailed for six months for stealing from passengers' luggage, police said.
The offences took place while Alan Bardall, 52, was responsible for scanning luggage tags to ensure that it was being sent to the right destinations.
But he abused his position to steal two laptops, a camcorder and aftershave with a combined approximate value of £2,000, Isleworth Crown Court in west London heard.
One of the laptops belonged to an American student and contained a whole year's worth of coursework, while police were able to trace the owner of the camcorder by looking at photographs held on its memory card.
The hotel that the victim had been staying in was identified, and officers were then able to determine the person's name and airline.
Bardall, of The Gardens, Feltham, Middlesex, was sentenced to six months for six counts of theft and four counts of attempted theft, a spokesman for the Met Police said.
The offences in June came to light as a result of a covert operation by officers at the Heathrow Crime Squad. They identified that Bardall would select and open baggage, then steal valuables from inside and put them into his own bag before taking them home.
