JOLIET — Pre-orders are so high for the 41st Silver Belles Bazaar signature 5-inch felt mouse ornament, you won’t be able to purchase it the day of the event.
The mouse’s popularity has steadily increased since the Jeannie Lee Circle of the Will County Union of King’s Daughters (the union hosts the bazaar) introduced the themed mouse 30 years ago. Among its collectors are union members, such as Violet Gambrel of Joliet.
Gambrel has all but the first two mice, since, when the circle introduced the mouse, members fabricated only six of them. This year, the circle made 60 of this year’s mouse, a cowboy. Gambrel, who only brings the mice out during the holidays, longs to own a complete set of 30.
“They’re at a premium now,” Gambrel said. “I used to hang them on the lamp shades, but I have too many of them, so I hang them from the window.”
Some of Gambrel’s ornaments include a lady mouse in a Christmas dress holding a cake, a little girl mouse in pink garments, an angel mouse clutching a wreath, a mouse with nightdress and cap brandishing a candle, a Scottish mouse in a plaid kilt, a skier mouse with poles and skis, a tennis mouse, a choir mouse, a clown mouse, a chef mouse and a mouse with a vest and green top hat.
